A VERY FINE JAPANESE ANTIQUE TSUBA, approx 200 – 300 years old, that would have fitted on a Japanese sword to protect the hand from SWORD CUTS. An iron tsuba of beautiful and classic design, with the superb MULTI PETALLED CHRYSANTHEMUM DESIGN which is very skilful work by a master TSUBA maker!!! ……………… The CHRYSANTHEMUM was an important SYMBOL of the SHOGUN, with several variations on the number of petals…… GOOGLE Japanese Imperial Chrysanthemum for interesting reading!!! It measures approx 78mm x 77mmm x 5mm thick and is very smooth due to the fine workmanship and age! In addition it has an unusual silver insert which is beautifully and precisely formed in the kozuka hitsu ana! The iron has a beautiful patination which should NEVER be polished bright, the old colour is a very important feature, and part of the value of the TSUBA… Only a light waxing……….. It comes complete in the bag in the photo. It is a quiet masterpiece! Please see my other items!!
