Japanese antique iron tsuba (Ref Nihonto, NBTHK, katana, samurai sword) —
Offered for sale is an antique Japanese tsuba (sword guard). This is a good quality piece, probably from the Edo period. Nicely forged iron plate with a dark brown patina, depicting a dragon in clouds. The dragon is inlayed in brass (I guess) and has a very pleasing patina. The clouds seem to be silver inlayed. My knowledge regarding Japanese sword fittings is very limited but a friend of mine told me this could be an example from the Mito school. Please judge for yourself. Measurements: 7,7 cm x 7,1 cm x 4 mm. This tsuba could be very nice for mounting if you are working on a koshirae project for a katana or a large wakizashi, or it can be enjoyed as is.
