ORIGINAL 18th C. JAPANESE IRON TSUBA JAPANESE SAMURAI SWORD GUARD —
THIS LISTING IS FOR A NICE 18th CENTURY JAPANESE IRON TSUBA / SAMURAI SWORD GUARD. TSUBA IS THE HAND GUARD FOR A JAPANESE SWORD. THEY ARE USUALLY ROUND OR SQUARE WITH ROUNDED CORNERS AND ARE USED AT THE END OF THE SWORD GRIP. OFTEN THE TSUBA WAS DECORATED WITH INLAY OR OPEN WORK BUT MOST EARLIER ONES WERE PLAINER AS THEY WERE INTENDED TO BE FUNCTIONAL ITEMS USED TO PROTECT THE WARRIOR. THE CONDITION OF THIS TSUBA IS VERY GOOD WITH MINOR GILT OVERLAY ON CARVED RECESSED AREAS (SEE PHOTOS). NO OTHER NOTED FLAWS. THESE ITEMS WERE HAND MADE AND OFTEN HAD A VERY PRIMITIVE APPEARANCE WITH NO TWO BEING ALIKE. MEASURES 2 5/8″ LONG, 2 1/4″ WIDE AND 3/16 DEEP.
