IRON DRAGONFLY ANTIQUE JAPANESE TSUBA SWORD SAMURAI EDO DESIGN 300 years old —
CLASSIC JAPANESE ANTIQUE TSUBA WITH A DRAGONFLY DESIGN, approx 300 years old, that would have fitted on a Japanese sword to protect the hand from SWORD CUTS. An iron tsuba with incised design of a dragonfly…… The whole dragonfly was originally inlaid, the only slight remaining inlay is on the eye and tail, as the inlay has been lost through the hundreds of years and wear from use. The tsuba has a very smooth rounded feel to it, also from use, which is nice. It measures approx 80mm high x 76mm wide….. 4.5mm thick (the blade aperture is approx 25.5mm high by max 8mm wide) and is a heavy chunky TSUBA which is nice…………. Dragonflies were admired by the Samurai, for their speed and prowess, and hunting skills, qualities that Samurai aspired to, the Dragonfly can only go forwards, so the tsuba is a reminder to the owner to be the hunter, victorious, not the victim……………………… To forge and cut solid iron to such a perfect shape, very difficult and exacting work which requires supreme skill. The iron has a beautiful patination which should NEVER be polished bright, the old colour is a very important feature, and part of the value of the TSUBA… Only a light waxing………..
