Japanese Sword Guards, Tsuba 4 —
Japanese Sword Guards, Tsuba 4. All for same price. These are antique Japanese sword guards, called Tsuba, that I have collected from Japanese dealers and other sources over the years. All of these Tsuba came off Japanese swords. All shows signs of use and age. 2 are Katana size and the others came off Wakazashi. The top right Tsuba is made of copper and has applied gold to the rim, see pictures. Shows age use and wear. The lower right is made of iron and has copper shims from prior mounting. It also has been altered long ago to accommodate a side implement, Kozuka? It is in reasonably good condition. I do not know the motif. The top left is made of copper with gold applied to the figures and flowers. This Tsuba displays a bull carrying a child lead by a man. This Tsuba came of a small Wakazashi and the raised areas that show wear due to use from the Samurai age in which it was made. The lower left is made of iron and the motif, a frog and bamboo near a stream. It is in good condition and though it came on a Wakazashi I bought , it does not appear to have been mounted to it. This Tsuba also appears to be cast not traditionally made. It came from Japan so I think it is a mirror makers Tsuba made for lower class of Samurai and others allowed to carry a Wakazashi but who could not afford better.
