ORIGINAL 18th-19th C. JAPANESE IRON TSUBA, GOLD INLAY, SAMURAI SWORD GUARD —
THIS LISTING IS FOR A NICE 18th CENTURY OR EARLY 19th CENTURY JAPANESE IRON TSUBA SAMURAI SWORD GUARD. TSUBA IS THE HAND GUARD FOR A JAPANESE SWORD. THEY ARE USUALLY ROUND OR SQUARE WITH ROUNDED CORNERS AND ARE USED AT THE END OF THE SWORD GRIP. THIS TSUBA IS DECORATED WITH INCISED DECORATION WITH SEVERAL SMALL PLACES HAVING GOLD INLAY WORK. MOST TSUBA HAVE SIMPLE DECORATION AS THEY WERE INTENDED TO BE FUNCTIONAL ITEMS USED TO PROTECT THE WARRIOR. THE CONDITION OF THIS TSUBA IS VERY GOOD WITH MINOR SIGNS OF NORMAL WEAR AND AGE (SEE PHOTOS). THESE ITEMS WERE HAND MADE AND OFTEN HAD A VERY PRIMITIVE APPEARANCE WITH NO TWO BEING ALIKE. MEASURES 2 5/8″ LONG, 2 1/4″ WIDE AND 3/16 DEEP. WEIGHS 5.7 OUNCES. Have been in the Antiques business for over 30 years and try to describe our items as accurately as possible.
