Thank you for visiting our page!! Antique Japanese Needle & Thread Inlay Folded-Back Rim Tsuba Sword Guard w Box. Condition: Antique USED. Shows signs of age including dirt, scratches and rust. Product DetailsThere is a tsuba box. (please note that the actual box may differ slightly from the one shown in photos, with possible variations in fabric color and details). Edo Period Japanese Sword Guard (Tsuba) – Hexagonal Uchigaeshi with Needle & Thread Inlay. Presenting an exceptional Edo period Japanese sword guard (tsuba) featuring the sophisticated uchigaeshi (folded-back rim) technique in an elegant hexagonal form. This substantial and impressive tsuba is crafted from well-forged iron with meticulous inlay work (zogan) depicting sewing needles and thread-a rare and intricate design theme. The folded-back rim construction not only creates an aesthetically pleasing hexagonal profile but also provides additional structural strength, demonstrating the technical mastery of the smith who created this piece. The detailed inlay work of sewing implements showcases extraordinary precision and artistic sensibility. Perfect both as a display piece for Japanese art collectors and as a functional component for mounting on your sword (katana, wakizashi, or iaito). Style: Uchigaeshi (folded-back rim) in hexagonal form. Design: Sewing needles and thread motif in fine inlay work. Dimensions: Approximately 82.1 mm × 70.8 mm (3.23 × 2.79 inches). Thickness of Flat Area: Approximately 4 mm (0.16 inches). Thickness at Rim: Approximately 6.9 mm (0.27 inches). The uchigaeshi technique seen in this tsuba involves folding back the edges of the iron plate to create a thickened rim, requiring considerable skill from the smith. This method produces a guard that is both aesthetically refined and structurally robust. The hexagonal shape is less common than round or square designs, making this an especially desirable example. The choice of sewing implements as decorative motifs reflects the appreciation for craftsmanship and everyday tools in Japanese aesthetic tradition. The contrast between the utilitarian subject matter and the refined execution creates a piece that embodies the Japanese concept of finding beauty in practical objects. As expected with an antique item from the Edo period, this tsuba displays a natural patina and signs of age consistent with its historical origin, adding to its authenticity and character. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. Storage box included (please note that the actual box may differ slightly from the one shown in photos, with possible variations in fabric color and details). As this is an antique item, please be aware that there may be wear, minor scratches, stains, and patina due to age.
