This is a large, thinly crafted period tsuba with no signature, made by an ancient sword smith, without hitsu-ana (side holes), featuring negative silhouette openwork. It comes in a paulownia wood box. It produces a very high-pitched ring when struck. While this exact pattern is not shown, similar designs are explained in Sword Arts Magazine No. 457, pages 30-31, discussing various ancient sword smith tsuba. A very similar design from the Onin period appears in the color pages of Introduction to Sword Fittings Vol. 1, reflecting the popular style of that era.
