Japanese antique Iron tsuba with gold phoenix onlay —
This is an antique iron tsuba with a nice dark brown, almost black patina. The phoenix onlay is made of two types of gold , one a lighter gold alloy (Aoikin) and one pure gold (Akakuchi) to create a color contrast in the tail and neck of the phoenix. The tail beautifully wraps around the edge of the piece to the back. It has been mounted on a sword before at one time, as evidenced by the yamagane copper inserts in the nakago ana, and the dark black shakudo plug filling the kogai ana.
